Famili Ceria

Famili: Kau jaga-jaga, Amir.

Aku: Huh? Apasal?

F: Bukan sekarang, tapi nanti? Dengki dengan kejayaan kau -

Aku: Kejayaan? Hahaha.

Aku: Itu bukan masalah aku. Itu masalah diorang dengan ego diorang.

F: Yelah! Tapi nanti dia buat macam-macam. Kata macam-macam!

Aku: Cis! Abis, nak aku hidup dalam ketakutan? Mengisi paranoia setiap hari? Adakah kau fikir aku seperti anak kecil yang diagah polong?

F: Jangan kau biarkan mereka mendarat di sini! Eh, apa dialog ni?

Aku: Oh, sorry. Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa punya trailer.

F: Ah, anyway, kau jangan biarkan orang-orang bodoh menyerang kau.

Aku: Pertama sekali, 'orang', bukan 'orang-orang'. 'Orang tua-tua', bukan 'orang-orang tua'.

F: Yelah! Yelah!

Aku: Kedua, seperti kata bapak aku, "Pedulittaik aku?" Aku takkan mengubah hidup aku demi ego rapuh orang bodoh-bodoh. Membujur lalu, melintang patah. Biar mereka terjun dengan labu tahi mereka. Aku tetap aku. Aku bukak langkah, dan takkan aku mengalah. Ha! Ha! Ha!

F: Kau nak pergi mana tu?

Aku: Pergi berak.

Family Planning

I just got back from a brief outing with family members. We were planning some stuff. Hence, family planning.

All families are fucked up. Dysfunctional. Nothing special there. My family is no different. However, we do follow our own brand of logic. Most of us value our privacy, and I can't talk about our plans or whatever.

It's just that I must say that I observe my relationship with them gets better over the years. I've let go of a lot of my angst, and I don't allow them to even attempt to control me. Not anymore.

We're all very stubborn people. Extremely stubborn. Maybe that's why it's hard to kill any one of us. We have resilient genes. And we're proud as well as egotistical enough to go for things we are weakest in.

My weakness was in writing, so I became a writer. One relative found chemical calculations to be very challenging, so the person went and took on a chemical engineering course.

I was intrigued with the paranormal, so I went last Raya to seek out ghosts in the family. I couldn't find any, which to me is proof that our family does not keep ghosts.

At the end of it all, we will conquer all our fears and acquire skill sets we do not have. One day, we shall produce The Ultimates.

Before that, there is me, The Penultimate. And so handsome. Hahahaha!

The H-Bomb

I find that in business, and in daily life, humility is important. Not faux humility, which is stupid, but the real thing.

Humility is not about kow-towing to people. It is not about creating 'levels' and putting yourself 'lower' than some people.

That's subscribing to the ego. Feeding the ego. And I find it extremely condescending for people to think that myself or others would fall for such simple manipulation. I mean, you think we're THAT stupid?

Well, at least that's what I think.

To me, humility is simply telling The Truth and respecting people. You are humble enough to see that people will not fall for your pathetic bullshit, and you don't try to ram it down their throats.

Whenever I go for business meetings, I do not expect to razzle dazzle people with shit. If they were to be razzled or dazzled, it would be through logic and common sense. It's a bit harder, but there in the effort, lies the respect to another's intelligence.

Some people only see faux humility, and they use it to manipulate other people. This is ultimate arrogance. Which is fine. Go ahead. I mean, makes my job so much easier when there are so many assholes out there.

Respect for people comes in many different ways. For example, I am friends with many people whose outlook and views I don't agree with. I know lots of racists from many sides. I don't hold it against them. Go ahead and be racist lah. I don't agree with you, but that doesn't mean I'm going to kill you or sneak in one night into your home and stab you in the dark.

I am friends with people who believe that everyone should be forced to believe in this or that. I don't believe that, but hey, man, the very freedom I believe in also protects and allows, even accepts views and actions opposite to mine.

Problems only arise when insecure people who NEED approval from everyone in order to live, start defending their beliefs. Or people who believe everyone is like them - petty, shallow and boring.

Oh well. Back to humility. Yes. Good stuff. Respect people enough to tell them The Truth. And allow them to be. Except for Koreans.

Change of Plans!

I was content to just sit around and rest before tonight's work, when my relatives called.

They're coming for a visit. Like, today. Right now.

It used to be that I would accomodate these people. Cancel my plans and whatnot. These days, hey man, you drop by just like that, and you have to follow my rules. My schedule.

I'm not a Quraisy Arab. You come and get the keys from me, wherever I may be at the time. Eat whatever you can find, and arrange for your own transportation.

All this could have been averted, if they call at least a few days in advance. Oh well. This is how they want to do it, so this is how it will play out.

I did not unleash Lucifer for nothing.

King Nothing

I decided to do nothing today, as I have loads to do tonight. A rock concert that will last for five hours, and writing about it immediately after that, along with other stuff.

It takes some effort to do nothing, really. I do entertainment, so watching anything is part-work. Reading is also work.

So to do nothing, usually I just close my eyes and be with myself, without my mind entering into it.

This has led me to spending a lot of time with myself, and it is the purest, non-poisonous state I have discovered.

Whenever I meet people, the approval-seeker in me tends to shape-shift into whatever it is they think of me. Whatever they need of me. This, can be tiring.

I mean, I meet some people, and they expect me to swear all the time. I meet some people, and just cause they consider me a Malay, they expect me to be dumb. I see some insecure people, and all they want is for me to prove myself as 'lower' than them.

Do you know how hard it is to crack jokes for some people, sometimes? How hard it is to stay serious, when all you want to do is have fun?

So I don't see them anymore. I go out with people who do not expect me to be anything. Smart, stupid, they don't care. And when I have been with them enough, I go home, and be with myself.

Which is more than enough.

Sometimes, I just want to glide.

Orang Macam Aku

Hahahaha.

Masalahnya, dahlah aku suka muzikal, dan pernah menulis filem muzikal, suka tengok Glee, dan suka buat lawak gay - kalau aku pergilah mana-mana benda tu, nanti kang diingatnya aku gay la pulak. Hahahaha.

AKu pernah kena raba dalam panggung wayang, dek seorang pondan. Masa aku kena raba, aku fikir, "Inilah hukum karma, balasan Tuhan atas apa aku pernah buat dulu." dan, "Laku jugak mak, nyah!"

Aku pergi sound la mamat pondan tu. Dia mintak maaf, pasal dia ingat aku gay. Siap offer aku Twisties lagi.

Mungkin berarak tengah jalan.

Masalahnya, aku fikir diorang takda Rosa Parks.

Takde api pun. Asap je.

Secara peribadi, aku fikir gay bagus. Kurang sikit lelaki, senang aku nak ejas puki. Lesbian dan perempuan biseksual pun bagus. Boleh buat threesome. Hahaha.

Haih... aku tengok je lah. Sambil makan Twisties. Hahaha.

Siri Muzik Mental: Supira no Jokei

AKu sekarang tengah dengar Supira no Jokei, yang amat menenangkan.

AKu cari kat YouTube, takde. Hahaha.

Aku suka bila komposer Final Fantasy mengambil unsur-unsur muzik serata dunia. Setakat ni, aku dah dengar pengaruh gospel, rock, electronica, lagu cam lanun punya lagu, English folk, blah blah blah. Gamelan pun ada, beb. Spanish flamenco la, organ la, apa la.

Ini lagu 'fight' dari Final Fantasy 9.

Cis! Hahahaha!

Rock Kapak

Malam ni, aku pergi konsert rock kapak. Woohoo! Dangdut pun aku layan, sebenarnya. Rock kapak pun rock kapak lah.

Last time aku pergi konsert rock, bila ah? Oh. Tahun lepas. Kat Hard Rock.

Dulu, masa aku muda remaja, aku memandang rendah pada muzik Melayu. Sapa dengar muzik Melayu ni adalah 'inferior'. Aku dengar muzik omputih je. Ni masa umur aku 17 sampai 23.

Tapi ko tau, pemuzik-pemuzik paling hebat dalam dunia tak membezakan muzik. Takde perkauman dalam muzik. Kalau muzik pun kau nak amalkan perkauman, kau memang lagi fucked up dari sesapa.

Lagu kartun. Lagu game.

Dan kau tau? Lagu-lagu kartun yang paling best dia tak kira genre. Lagu Final Fantasy siap ambik unsur-unsur gamelan Bali dan asli Melayu, macam lagu Ikai Okuri.

Dia jugak ambik gospel, untuk FFVIII. Sapa entah mamat tu. Nobuo Uematsu?

Muahahahaha. Rambut pendek je. Pakai baju hip-hop. Lagu? ROCK KAPAK! YEAAARRRGHH!!!

The Competition

For some reason, some people are always in competition mode. Endlessly comparing, fighting other people and setting them up to fall so that they could win.

And that's the joke, at their expense. Win what? Muahahaha.

Any boost to the ego is temporary. Fleeting. Because the ego is a bottomless pit.

Oh well.

Not my problem.

Mabuk-Mabuk Kepayang: Jalan Syurga Tidak Terbatas

AKu ramalkan, dalam masa dua tahun, Melayu-Melayu ni semua jahanam.

Aku nak buat apa pun tak boleh. Aku bukan adiwira, beb. Adiwira = superhero.

Aku last-last mati katak je kot?

Aku bukan Penyelamat Dunia. Bukan Raja Utara. Bukan Dewa Perang. Aku hanya Nankabu.

Biar aku hilang pedoman. Namun, aku tetap best. Pasal aku hensem. Muahahahahahaha!

Tales from the Tipsy Side: Sing Me a Song

I just got back from a karaoke outing. Fun bunch. Though I must say they still think karaoke is for singing properly. Hahahahaha.

I go and sing to massacre some songs and probably one day sing them well enough.

One day, when the Magika songs are available on karaoke, I want to go and sing it all night long. Hahahahaha.

Tonight was also Cherry, Hellsen's girlfriend's, birthday. So happy birthday, Cherry!

There were some songs I didn't get to sing, so I'm planning to go again, soon. I'm really turning into an old man, and I am quite okay with it.

Now, where's my three bottles? I have it here, somewhere, and I plan on finishing the job. So there.

Berirama... senandung semalam...

Bokura no negai ga todoku toki

Ginga renpo haruka ni ko-e-te

Hikari totomo ni yattekuru

Imada! Henshin! Hokuto to Minamiiii!

Tatta kaeee, tatta kaeee

Urutoraman Eiisu!

I've always wondered what happened to Minami, after she died. Well, she started a mochi (Japanese sweet kuih using glutinous rice) business with Father of Ultra and Ultraman Taro.

I know she's from the '70s, but Minami was hot, man!

Oh yeah!

Alamak, tertukat bahasa omputih la pulak. Oklah, gua nak pergi bergumbira!

Lucifer Morningstar

I walk with the demon by my side. The devil himself.

Lucifer: So.

Me: So?

Lucifer: How's it working for you?

Me: Unleashing you was a good idea.

L: Yeah, none of that empathy crap, huh?

Me: No. I still have empathy.

L: Be careful. Martian Man-

Me: yeah, I know what happened to Martian Manhunter. In Kingdom Come. He opened himself to the thoughts of the world and it shattered him. I'm no superhero. I have empathy, not telepathy.

L: It's still a cancer in you.

Me: Without empathy, I will be a psychopath.

L: If you say so. Talking to yourself is also crazy, you know?

Me: Yeah, why am I doing this anyway? I should put you away.

L: Na-ah. I'm the only one of your incarnations smart enough to understand what you're talking about.

Me: Y...eaaaah.

L: So, what's next?

Me: Well, I'm gonna take a shower and then prepare to go out. Already finished my work for today. It's time to go and have fun.

L: Fun? Really? Are we going to plant seeds of destruction and watch people die?

Me: No. Just normal fun.

L: Ah. That. Again?

Me: It's cheap and harmless.

L: If you say so.

Me: You believe it is not harmless?

L: Amir, everything you do always have repercussions. Bad ones.

Me: Ah, but that's a delusion. I am not the center of the universe. I am not the primum mobile, the Prime Mover. I am not responsible for the destruction of the universe. Natural entropy will take care of that.

L: If you say so...

Me: Anyway, thanks.

L: For what?

Me: For being there for me when no one else would. You're a real pal, Lucifer.

L: ...

Me: Hahahahahaha!

L: If you say that again, I'm going to kill you!

Me: No you will not.

L: Why not?

Me: Because I'm not suicidal.

L: Okay, since this is you and you talking, I guess that's true.

Me: Just relax and enjoy the show, Lou. This will be fun. The enjoyment of doing nothing for a few hours.

L: If you say so...

The Unreasonable Man

I have a messiah complex.

Every day, I wake up and I have to remind myself that I was not sent here, to this world, to save everyone.

I have ideas which I think everyone should adopt. I suffer from occassional delusions that I have gone through everything that I am living through. The scary part is that most of the times, whatever I predict, whatever I feel in my gut, turns out to be The Truth.

There is nothing supernatural about this. My mind works overtime, always in overdrive. Not because I am smart - and I am smart - but simply because I have a hyperactive mind. An active mind does not make it smart. Making connections no one has ever made before - like the relationship between mass and energy - that's smart.

Here's how my mind works. I see something, and I constantly create multiple scenarios on how this happened or where this will lead to. You can't imagine how many scenarios I go through in my head at every moment. Most of them are crap, filled with flying superheroes and energy beams. Some, I could have used, but is still learning to. I feel guilty for this, and is just learning how to take advantage of it.

And yes, I have been wrong before. That has never stopped me. It has never stopped anyone else.

I strive and work hard for some things I want. Some people call me unreasonable, but sometimes, being unreasonable is the only way that works for me.

For instance, I do not tolerate liars. I will, for a while, if I have to. But not for long. I do not tolerate the delusions of other people, because I am busy with my own delusions. That's a lie. Sometimes, I do tolerate other people's dementia, but not for long periods.

I am not a psychopath, but perhaps a high-level functioning reverse-sociopath. A few years back, I decided to embrace empathy, and that has gotten me into trouble.

I embraced empathy so I could become a better writer, but I find that paying attention to my audience takes the focus away from my work. It also has the stupid side effect of actually understanding how some people function. This knowledge is simply trash right now. A cancerous growth that nags me.

If I need to function as a writer better-equipped to come up with more empathic work, I need to further observe how God of Writing Neil Gaiman uses his empathy for stories without holding him back. Perhaps some disassociation is necessary.

Alan Moore - the Elder God of Writing - does not seem to have any natural empathy, but understands some things that are beyond the normal human comprehension. He is inhuman, in my book.

Oh well. I need to finish my work now. The deadline beckons.

Max Pain

Make no mistake. Pain-worshippers walk amongst us.

I once followed a psychology course, and there is a thing called the 'animal archetype'. This concept is taught in several schools of psychology, sometimes under different names.

The 'animals' are people who go through life in a sad and pathetic haze of apathy, pain, depression and self-destruction. It is not really an absolute identity, as everyone can be an 'animal' at different times, as much as they can embody the 'trickster' persona.

'Animals' basically believe that they deserve pain. They seek pain, they find it, and then they complain about it to generate even more pain. They blame other people. They try to bring everyone down to their animalistic state.

I have had an endless battle with 'animals' almost all my life, until I stopped two years ago.

Not my fucking responsibility, is it? And it would be extremely presumptuous and arrogant - not to mention judgmental - to impose my own views of the world on these idiots, as well as other idiots.

These 'animals' drown in their own pain and bullshit, and if you're not careful, they will drag you down with them. To be fair, my archetype was the 'hero' and I was drowning in my own bullshit as well. Only, I called it the Code of Bushido, which sounds cooler but is no less stupid and irritating.

My only statement, perhaps advice, is to stay away from 'animals'. Do not feed them, and don't get into a cage with them. 'Animals', when cornered, can be very dangerous.

Just go out there and do stuff. Forget they exist. Let them die.

Juggling Chainsaws

A fortnight ago, two friends wanted to meet up with me for lunch, tea or dinner. Separately. I see different circles of friends.

Things have been so hectic that we kept on moving our schedules here and there and everywhere. Two weeks later, we still haven't met yet.

We are extremely busy people. We move around a lot. Nowadays, I hardly stay at one place for more than three to four hours, unless it's my apartment or there are multiple meetings at the same place.

I have also almost stopped watching TV shows. I have a backlog of stuff I need to catch up on.

And still, many people think I sit around and do nothing. I got two deadlines in one and a half hours. And it's a Saturday.

I think I need a PA.

The Mentalist

When I was younger, I watched Chinese TV serials. Police Cadet '86, blah blah blah.

There was one series which I followed for two or three years, about a guy who inherited a mooncake shop from his father.

It tells of how he rebuilt the business from the ground up after his siblings from the first marriage (his mother is the mistress of the mooncake tycoon) sabotaged his business all the way.

It's like a Hong Kong The Bold and the Beautiful. The series showed values that my parents forced upon me. Hard work, determination, good business sense, blah blah blah.

The boy eventually grew up to be a tycoon. He eventually invested in the HK real-estate boom of the time.

There were other, similar stories, about how hard it was for a boy who came from China to HK during World War 2, how he had to deal with the black market to get food, bla bla bla bla.

These stories on TV, are important because they are nation building. They build up people because it reaches deep down inside the psyche of the masses, who would perhaps more readily accept lessons delivered through palatable fiction in evening dramas rather than hard-sell ad campaigns. It's a subtle approach, and subtle is always good.

I was also heavily influenced, as a young kid, by Japanese manga and Japanese TV. Those always showcase a modern form of the Code of Bushido - a code of honour samurais follow. Though I found out later that the code and ethics, outlined by the Book of Five Rings, amongst others, is a lie - concocted by samurais who are also scholars of their time to validate them getting salaries from the state - the damage was already done.

I was already living life with the delusion that I am a samurai. That I have to follow strict ethical codes, if not moral ones. Haha. Yeah, that's a laugh, right?

Anyway, TV is important for the things they teach the young. The values we see on TV now is what the people will most probably adopt, unconsciously, slowly, through osmosis over the years.

And yet, a lot of dramas I see on TV used to worry me. Usually, the final solution, the ending, is the main character getting married.

I read one book by a renowned writer who outlines this character's life. A hardworking lad, he makes roti canai at three places everyday, working three four-hour shifts. Hardworking, right? What is his ending? As a reward for being good, he marries a rich girl. What?

This fixation on fucking worries me. I mean, if it means go go bars and the legalisation of prostitution, then I am all for it. But if it seeps into the public's psyche that all one has to do is get married to prove that their pussy/dick can attract another pussy/dick, then my worry was justified.

I'm not worried today, cause I'm New Age and pretentious and shit, but the fact remains that there are whole generations of Malaysians who were bombarded with the ideology that marriage and family is the center of the universe. I am not saying this is wrong, or that anyone's belief is wrong. I am just saying that I believe this is a corroding element in society. That's what I believe in.

I believe that a lot of people might grow up thinking that all they have to do is to get married, and that's the end of it. No, stupid. Marriage is the beginning of things. Good, bad, all of it rolled together and shoved up your ass.

And there is no such thing as 'rezeki anak'. You don't magically get imbued with supernatural luck because you successfully bred a child into this dark, dank, dirty world.

No.

Some of the time, it is other people - sometimes demons like me - who think about you and your family and do stuff so that your family would not die. Most of the time, it is just your hard work. Give yourself some credit. Give your work some credit.

I don't believe in magic. I believe that there is a reason for everything.

Oh well. I guess I am an old man.

Days of Thunder

I started the day with an assignment at The Curve. Soon, an old friend contacted me about an interview.

After that, a contact asked for a snap meeting at Ikea, a request I was happy to oblige.

Then it's back to Bangsar for a two-hour session with an Indonesian craftsman. I failed to cram another meeting after that, as my next contact was busy and my next appointment was at 6.30pm.

I am collecting data. Information. As a wielder of information, I appreciate all forms of data.

Tonight is a long night, filled with writing various things. Busy, busy, busy.

Okay, back to my meeting.

tranCenDenz, Capital 'C', Capital 'D'

Was about to write an article on tranCenDenz, beyond eXisTenz, but my snap appointment just commenced.

See you after the gap!

The Return of the Could-Have-Beens

You know, people come to me, telling me how they want to do this or that. And they never do.

Fucking morons.

"Amir, let's start a goat-herding thing."

"Sure! Goats breed like crazy, and it is unlucky indeed for a goat to just have twins. They usually get triplets or more. The new breed of goats are even healthier and produce more milk. Goat milk is the most widely-used in the world, not cows'. And it's useful for those lactose-intolerant people as well."

"Er, right."

Fast-forward five years later, and nada.

Then, they come again.

"Amir, I have 20 acres of land on lease. I want to plant something."

"Sure! How about asparagus? They can grow up to six inches in a DAY! It's relatively expensive in Malaysia and the export potential is tremendous! And get this idea - Halal vegetables! Huh? Huh?"

"Mm... sure."

Five years pass us by.

"So, how's the farming thing? You know, it doesn't have to be asparagus. Can be anything. Bamboo. Vanilla, blablabla."

"I'm waiting."

Fuck, man. They'll never do anything. And most will never call me back. Why?

Simple. Whenever anyone approaches me with a business idea, I always ask them, "Have you done your due dilligence?"

Which means, as I explain to them, you need to find out how much you need to start things up, how much profit you need to generate for how long until you break even. You also need to find out, how things work and how to turn a profit.

For example, goat-rearing. What kind of goats, how many goats, on how big a piece of land? How much do you need for fencing costs? What kind of material for the fence? Manpower issues. How long until they start breeding? How much milk can you get? How do you get the milk? Who do you sell the milk to? For how much? How do you get the milk/meat from point A to point B? Is there a market for it? What about the export market? Who do you need to talk to, in order to get your product overseas? What about packaging? Logistics? Storage?

So when I get through with an idea, the amount of work seems crazy, to these people. And they get scared and lethargic. They like to be lulled in the delusion that rearing goats or planting stuff is just an easy job. Just do some initial, easy stuff, and forget about it. And then shake leg, get lots of money.

Fuck you, man.

Look, motherfucker, I grew up with agriculture projects around me. And I am in the entertainment business for around seven years now. No business is easy. Everything requires your attention, presence and hard work.

And you need to know stuff. If you don't, find out. Find out the most basic thing - profit margins. If you do something for 10 million, make sure three million is yours. If you do something and you make a gross of 100 bucks, make sure you get 30 bucks nett, at least.

Think big, motherfucker!

Simple shit, but some people don't speak to me anymore about their business dealings, because I'm labeled a spoilsport. They don't like to hear about all this work. They just like the idea of having an idea.

They want other people to look at them and think or better yet, say, "Oh, he COULD HAVE BEEN this or that."

And then they have the cheek to turn to me and say, since I'm all New Age and shit, that I have no drive.

Who knows? Maybe I don't. But I'm not THAT stupid either. I may be a dreamer, but I'm not THAT dumb.

Stupid fucking morons. Don't come to me with your bullshit. Without actually sitting down and actually do something about shit, you're just all talk, motherfucker. Fucking cowards.

And then, if they do sit down and initiate some work, they always blame other people. In fact, for some, blaming other people is the only thing they want. They do stuff, so that one day they could blame other people.

"Oh, I COULD HAVE done this or that, but the Government prevented me from doing so."

Or

"Fucking Chinese have a monopoly!"

Or

"Fucking Malays have crutches. How can I compete?!"

Or

"He won't let me do that!"

Or

"She won't let me do that!"

Fact is, you're all morons. Suck my dick.

It's not race. Well, yes, sometimes racism does play a part, but you know what a bigger part is? YOU. You're bigger than racism. You're bigger than the Government. You MAKE the Government. So you can break it too, if you want.

Lazy ass motherfuckers. Go and die! Death to all your family members. Take your stupid fucking gene pool out of the whole shit.
